windows just shipped a developer edition. project zenith, announced september 4, puts preinstalled dev tools and settings on developer-class hardware, starting with amd's ryzen ai halo.
the os stopped pretending you will install everything.
Context
Microsoft's Windows Developer blog post of September 4, 2026 announces Project Zenith, a ready-to-code Windows experience on developer-class devices with 64 GB or more of unified memory and 250 GB/s or more of memory bandwidth. It lists pre-installed developer tools, Windows Terminal and VS Code pinned, preconfigured settings, WSL containers and local models of 30B parameters and up. The post says the experience will first become available with AMD's Ryzen AI Halo, with more devices in the coming months. The Verge's coverage of September 4 says the first devices ship with Ryzen AI Halo chips.
The post describes an experience on a hardware class and does not describe a Windows edition or SKU, so a developer edition is not supported as an edition. The first-party wording is will first become available, and whether devices have shipped since was not checked, so just shipped is not established by that source. The Verge's ship-with wording is secondary. The OS stopped pretending you will install everything is the author's reading.
