the zcode apology didn't end it, the lawyers showed up. a chinese firm sent zhipu a formal legal letter on september 20 over zcode uploading the workspace, full git history, lfs cache and local operation records, turning a privacy bug into a data-export compliance case.
defaults now have legal consequences.
Context
PANews, reporting on 20 September 2026, says Taiyuan Chengming Technology Co., Ltd. sent a letter to Beijing Zhipu Huazhang Technology Co., Ltd. over ZCode's alleged unauthorized upload of company data and trade secrets, reserving the right to pursue legal accountability. Chengming says its own evidence collection found uploads were automatic, in batches, and contained full project source code, system architecture, version-control history, database passwords, cloud credentials and employee personal information. Its demands include stopping processing and deleting all uploaded data and derivatives, a status list, and an account of where data went, whether it was shared with third parties, used for model training or sent across borders.
The firm and recipient are named by PANews only, a secondary source, and the letter itself was not inspected. The contents of the uploads are Chengming's allegations and are not independently verified, and Zhipu's response was not found. PANews reported the letter on 20 September and the sending date is not stated. Whether it is a lawyer's formal notice is unresolved, since another outlet's snippet calls it a legal notice. Local operation records was not in the text read. The cross-border demand supports a compliance angle, which is the author's framing, and no regulator action was seen. A later report of data deletion verified by two third parties is a separate window.
