the react state library just went esm-only and dropped its legacy builds. jotai 3.0, out september 17, keeps backward compatibility while removing deprecated apis.
the floor moved without breaking anyone.
Context
InfoQ's article of September 14, 2026 on the stable Jotai 3 release says v3 drops the CommonJS build entirely and ships as ES modules only, and removes UMD and SystemJS bundles, older Node, React and TypeScript support and the jotai/babel plugin. A mirror of the GitHub 3.0.0 release text calls it a mostly backward-compatible update, dropping some legacy support and deprecated APIs, and a release commit message cites dropping Node 20. InfoQ lists atomFamily, loadable and the setSelf argument as gone, with atomFamily moving to jotai-family and loadable to jotai-eager, and the internal building-blocks API redesigned.
Backward compatible needs the team's qualifier mostly, and CommonJS consumers are affected, so the floor moved without breaking anyone is overstated. The September 17 date is not supported: InfoQ's stable article is dated September 14 and a newsletter of September 9 already discusses v3. The exact tag date of 3.0.0 was not read, and the sources are secondary, the mirror carrying only a relative-time stamp.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
