the most important compiler release this month shipped with the quietest announcement. llvm 23.1.1, out september 8, is the backend under clang, rust, swift and zig.

the backbone moved and nobody noticed.

Context

The LLVM Discourse announcement of September 8, 2026 presents LLVM 23.1.1 as a point release of the 23.x series covering LLVM and the subprojects clang, lld, libc++ and MLIR. Its one notable change is that 23.1.0 unintentionally broke the LLDB stable SB API ABI and 23.1.1 restores the original symbols. The post lists no new features, says official binaries will be provided later, and says third-party binaries are not checked by the release managers. It names 23.1.2 as planned for September 22.

How it compares

This is a bug-fix point release with an ABI regression fix and no listed features. The most important compiler release this month, the quietest announcement and nobody noticed are the author's framing with no comparison in the source. The announcement names clang but not Rust, Swift or Zig, so the backend-under claim for those three is not supported by this post.
