the more code ai writes, the more companies report it went wrong. techreviewer's september 10 survey found 89% of software companies use ai to write code while 90% report at least one downside, with the average firm running four ai tools at once.

adoption and regret are growing at the same rate.

Context

Techreviewer's press release of 10 September 2026 reports its third annual study of 127 software companies: 89 percent use AI to write or assist with code, about 90 percent report at least one downside, and companies use four AI tools on average. The report says it is an online survey run in July 2026 among companies from Techreviewer's own network, 74 percent with under 100 employees, with CEOs, presidents and marketing managers making up 71.6 percent of respondents and developers 2.4 percent. The stated margin of error is about 8.7 points for 2026, and the samples were 44 in 2024, 83 in 2025 and 127 in 2026. The top downsides were hallucinated suggestions at 52.8 percent, more review work at 44.1 percent, skill erosion at 37.0 percent and security issues at 33.1 percent.

How it compares

The 89 percent, 90 percent and four tools are supported, and they are self-reported by a mostly leadership panel from one vendor's network, so they describe that panel and not the industry. No cross-tab of AI code share against downsides and no year-by-year downside series was found, so the claim that adoption and regret grow at the same rate is the author's reading and is not supported by the text read. The report shows no causal claim. Sonar's developer survey also reports four tools on average, from a different pool.
