the monorepo changelog tool just cut its install weight by 88 percent. changesets v3, out september 22, goes esm-only and stops force-bumping peer dependencies to major versions.
the release tool got lighter than the packages it ships.
Context
The Changesets blog announcement of August 11, 2026 says all Changesets packages are ESM-only and require Node.js ^22.11 || ^24 || >=26, and that all change types now bump peer dependents by a patch version, with authors able to mark a major change in the same changeset. InfoQ's article of September 22, 2026 reports the release landing on August 11, install size falling from 16.1 MB to 2.1 MB and dependencies from 95 to 39, and calls it the first major release in seven years.
The first-party date is August 11 and September 22 is the InfoQ article date, so out September 22 does not match the primary source. The 88 percent matches the 16.1 MB to 2.1 MB arithmetic, is maintainer-reported, and measures package install size and not install time. Stops force-bumping to major versions is accurate in direction, as the default is now a patch bump, with major still possible when the author marks it. The Node minimum and the dropping of Yarn Classic, per InfoQ, are possible migration friction. The release tool got lighter than the packages it ships is the author's take.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
