the image model race just moved to your desktop. qwen-image-2.1, out september 21, packs text-to-image, editing, transparency and native 2k output into a 7b open-weights model that runs on an rtx 3090.
the pro-tier image stack is now a weekend project.
Context
Alibaba Cloud's post of September 21, 2026 and the Hugging Face model card describe Qwen-Image-2.1 as one model that unifies text-to-image generation and image editing, with 7B parameters in its visual generation component, a 32-layer single-stream DiT, and native transparency (RGBA generation and editing). The card's example code uses 2048 by 2048 output. The weights are on Hugging Face under the Qwen Research License Agreement.
The note says it runs on an RTX 3090. The card shows a CPU offload option but states no GPU or VRAM requirement in the text read, so that is not established. The Alibaba post calls it open-source, while the card names a research license whose terms were not read, so open-weights is supported and open-source in the strict sense is not verified. The words native 2K were not found, only 2048-class example code. A ComfyUI listing dated September 20, 2026 suggests the weights may have been public a day earlier, and that page was not read. The Qwen-Image-Bench comparisons are vendor-reported.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
