the ethereum dev stack just got a rust engine under the hood. hardhat 3, out this week with v3.17.0, runs solidity tests on a rust-powered runtime and fixes gas estimation when internal calls run out of gas.

the evm toolchain keeps getting faster at the lowest layer.

Context

The Hardhat 3.17.0 changelog entry, read in the package changelog as shipped in 3.18.0, says it adds a gasEstimationMode config option to EDR networks, featuring a noInternalOutOfGas mode to prevent misleading eth_estimateGas results when internal calls run out of gas. Other 3.17.0 items are ethers using EDR's native Keccak-256 and cryptography dependency updates. The Hardhat site describes Hardhat 3 as the latest major version with a Rust-powered runtime, EDR simulated networks and Solidity tests.

How it compares

gasEstimationMode is an opt-in configuration mode and not a blanket fix, and its default was not stated in the passage read. The Rust runtime predates 3.17.0, since Hardhat 3 as a major version already described it, so just got a rust engine is the author's framing. The changelog carries no dates, and an npm listing's relative age cannot be mapped to a calendar date, so the release date is unresolved. The homepage's Rust wording was truncated in the read, and the EDR docs page was a listing only. 3.18.0 existed at the time of the fetch.
