the engineer merged 8 times more code per day. anthropic's institute reported that in q2 2026 the typical engineer merged 8x as much code daily as in 2024, because claude writes it and the human directs and reviews.

the bottleneck moved from typing to judgment.

Context

Anthropic Institute's essay When AI builds itself says lines of code merged per engineer per day stayed constant from 2021 to 2024, then climbed in 2025, and that in the second quarter of 2026 the typical engineer was merging 8x as much code per day as in 2024; as of May 2026 more than 80 percent of the code merged into Anthropic's codebase was authored by Claude.

How it compares

This is first-party, on Anthropic's own data, and not independent. The essay itself says lines of code is an imperfect measure and 8x is almost certainly an overstatement of the true productivity gain. Its introduction gives a different phrasing (8x per quarter against 2021 to 2025), and the note follows the body. The metric is merged lines, not delivery, quality or an isolated AI effect. The essay says Claude writes much of the code, and the human directs and reviews is the author's gloss. The bottleneck moved from typing to judgment is the author's take.
