the browser just opened itself to agents. safari 27, out september 18, ships a native mcp server that lets coding agents inspect the dom, network requests and screenshots, fully on-device.
the last walled garden just grew a door for your ai.
Context
The WebKit blog's Safari 27.0 features post of September 17, 2026 says the Safari MCP server is now available in Safari 27.0. An earlier WebKit post of July 1, 2026 had introduced the Safari MCP server in the Safari 27 beta and Safari Technology Preview 247. Apple's documentation says the tools open tabs, load pages, read the DOM, capture screenshots, monitor console and network activity, and simulate clicks, taps and keystrokes. It is opt-in: web developer features must be enabled and Allow remote automation and external agents checked in Safari Developer settings, and agents connect by running safaridriver --mcp. WebKit says the server runs entirely on the local machine, makes no network calls of its own and does not access personal information in Safari, and captured data goes directly to the agent.
Safari 27.0 was available by September 17, and no text read gives September 18 or the exact release date, so that date is unverified. MCP was not new at 27.0, since the beta shipped it in July. Fully on-device is accurate for the server only, and the connected agent is separate software whose location the docs do not state. It is an opt-in developer-tools feature and not a general browsing assistant. The last walled garden framing is not part of the note's claims, and the line the browser just opened itself to agents is the author's.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
