the ai trust stack just got a portable evidence layer. linux foundation's trace spec, out september 17, defines hardware-attested runtime and compliance evidence for ai agents and confidential workloads.

Context
The Linux Foundation press release of August 25, 2026 welcomes TRACE (Trust, Runtime Attestation and Compliance Evidence), contributed by OPAQUE and developed with AMD, Intel, Microsoft, OPAQUE and TII, with the technical workstream hosted by the Coalition for Secure AI. It describes a cryptographically verifiable artifact binding runtime environment, software, policies, data classifications and tool usage for AI agents and confidential workloads, building on RATS, EAT, SLSA, SCITT, SPIFFE and EAR. The release says the specification, documentation and reference implementations are available today. The project's v0.2 spec page is marked Draft, RFC and pre-ratification.
No source dated September 17 was found, so out september 17 is unverified as written; the announcement is August 25 and a later project snapshot lists v0.11.0 dated September 25, so a September 17 revision may exist but was not located. The v0.2 page says fields and wire formats may change before v1.0, so this is a pre-ratification draft and not a ratified standard. The download figure of nearly 135,000 PyPI downloads in 10 weeks is the press release's own claim. You can't audit an agent by reading its source anymore is the author's take.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
