surrealdb rebuilt its graph engine for 3.3. beta 4, out september 9, adds new relation types on top of the document and vector core.

the everything database is betting the graph is the part that wins.

Context

SurrealDB's 3.3 release page lists 3.3.0-beta.4 as released September 9, 2026 and calls it the largest of the line, with a reworked graph engine, new relation types and what it calls much faster traversals, plus access-control additions, commit-time locked reads and a public licence-enforcing Enterprise image. It describes LIGHTWEIGHT relations as record-less edges storing only id, in and out, alongside edges that carry their own data, with adjacency packed in blocks. The page snapshot read shows 3.3.0 stable released September 24, 2026.

How it compares

Much faster is the project's wording, and no benchmark numbers or configuration for graph traversals were read, so the speed is vendor-reported and unquantified. Beta 4 is correct for September 9, and the stable release followed on September 24, a later window than the note. The migration guide says the migration reached its final form in beta.4. On top of the document and vector core and the graph is the part that wins are the author's framing.
