serverless functions just got a 6x longer leash. aws lambda now allows 90-minute timeouts on managed instances, up from the 15-minute limit that forced every long job into a workaround, announced september 9.

the wall was never about the platform, it was about what we built around it.

Context

AWS's What's New post of September 9, 2026 says AWS Lambda now supports a 90-minute function timeout for asynchronous and event source mapping invocations on Lambda Managed Instances, a 6x increase from the previous 15-minute limit, in all AWS Regions where Lambda Managed Instances is available. The AWS Compute Blog post of the same day recounts the history, 5 minutes at launch in 2014 and 15 minutes in 2018.

How it compares

The longer timeout applies only to asynchronous and event source mapping invocations on Lambda Managed Instances, and AWS says synchronous invocations keep the existing 15-minute maximum. Standard Lambda was not stated to change in the text read, so serverless functions in general overstates it. The 6x is the maximum configurable timeout against the earlier limit, and not a performance or cost measure. Every long job is the author's wording, and AWS says the limit required architectural workarounds.
