physical ai just became an add-on card. ambarella's x7, out september 15, adds an ai accelerator to any host processor, giving old industrial hardware vision and robotics smarts without a new board.
the retrofit is the market.
Context
Ambarella's press release of September 15, 2026 announces the X7, its first dedicated CVflow AI accelerator chip, saying X7 is sampling now and XCalibur evaluation kits are available to qualified customers. XCalibur is a reference design in a standard 2280 M.2 card form with LPDDR5 memory and PCIe throughput above 840 MB/s, and Ambarella says it intends to make the complete design files available. The release describes the X7 as host-agnostic for Arm and x86 hosts, connecting over a single lane of PCIe Gen 3 or USB 3.2 as a PCIe device. It says that in current customer designs the X7 operates within a power envelope between 2 and 5 watts, and that it supports CNNs, vision transformers, multimodal transformers and hybrid networks.
The X7 is a chip and the add-on card is the XCalibur reference design, which is sampling and not generally available. Any host processor is looser than the release, which names Arm and x86 hosts with a PCIe lane or USB 3.2 port, and not every legacy unit is shown to have one. The 2 to 5 watts is a vendor figure from customer designs and not a card power spec, and no TOPS, precision, latency or named customer appears in the text read. First refers to Ambarella's first such chip. Physical AI just became an add-on card is the author's framing.
