openai just made the agent runtime a product. the agents sdk update, announced september 18, ships a model-native harness for working across files and tools on a computer, plus native sandbox execution, so long-horizon tasks run in controlled isolation.
the loop now comes with its own cage.
Context
OpenAI's post The next evolution of the Agents SDK, dated 15 April 2026, says the updated SDK helps developers build agents that can inspect files, run commands, edit code and work on long-horizon tasks within controlled sandbox environments, adding a model-native harness for working across files and tools on a computer and native sandbox execution. A secondary article of 24 September 2026 says the update is generally available at standard API pricing with sandbox providers Blaxel, Cloudflare, Daytona, E2B, Modal, Runloop and Vercel. OpenAI's Agents API of 10 September 2026 is a separate managed public beta.
The model-native harness and native sandbox execution are first-party, dated 15 April 2026, and the note's sentence closely tracks that page. Announced September 18 was not found: no first-party 18 September item was seen, and whether it marks a later release, GA or a wrong date is unresolved. Four surfaces are kept apart: the Agents SDK, the managed Agents API, the Codex SDK for local Codex and the App Server. The agent runtime as a product fits the managed Agents API more closely than the SDK, which runs in the developer's own process and provider sandboxes per the pages read.
