openai just joined the protocol it once ignored. reports from september 20 put openai on the mcp steering committee, letting the responses api connect to any mcp server, after anthropic donated the standard to the linux foundation.
adoption beat ownership.
Context
The Linux Foundation's announcement of 9 December 2025 forms the Agentic AI Foundation with founding contributions from Anthropic (MCP), Block (goose) and OpenAI (AGENTS.md), with Platinum members including AWS, Anthropic, Block, Bloomberg, Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. OpenAI's own cookbook and forum posts of 21 May 2025, seen as snippets, describe remote MCP server support in the Responses API.
Anthropic donating MCP to the Linux Foundation is first-party, dated December 2025. The dated items run against once ignored: OpenAI added remote MCP support to the Responses API in May 2025 and was a founding contributor and Platinum member in December 2025. An MCP steering committee seat and reports from September 20 were not found. The Responses API connecting to any MCP server is not established by the snippets, which describe remote MCP server support.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
