openai just doubled the number of open source maintainers it sponsors. the codex for oss program, renewed september 15, now covers 10,000 maintainers with six months of pro access and api credits for pull request review.
the maintenance economy got a corporate payroll.
Context
OpenAI's Codex for open source page says participants get six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex, conditional Codex Security access reviewed case by case, and API credits through the Codex Open Source Fund, with a $1 million fund. The page is undated. A secondary article from securityonline.info dated September 16, 2026 calls this a second round and says slots doubled from 5,000 to 10,000.
The doubling and the second round rest on the secondary article, and the first-party page read states the benefits but not the 10,000 figure or a September 15 date, so both are unverified as first-party facts. The metric is program slots and is not the same as 10,000 maintainers enrolled. The page gives API credits for projects using Codex in pull request review and similar work, so pull request review is one example and not the only use. Security access is case by case. The maintenance economy got a corporate payroll is the author's line.
