google's open models just went edge-native. gemma 4, out september 16, runs audio and vision fully offline on phones, raspberry pi and jetson, with e2b and e4b sizes.
frontier ai now has a pocket version.
Context
Google's Gemma 4 launch post, dated April 2, 2026, lists four sizes, Effective 2B (E2B), Effective 4B (E4B), 26B Mixture of Experts and 31B Dense. It says all models natively process video and images and that E2B and E4B add native audio input for speech recognition. It says the multimodal models run completely offline with near-zero latency on phones, Raspberry Pi and NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano.
The note says out September 16. The launch post is dated April 2, 2026 and no September 16 release page was found. Audio is native on E2B and E4B only. The offline and latency statements are Google's and not independently benchmarked. The Android route named is the AICore Developer Preview, which is a preview. The license name was not extracted.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
