cloudflare workers just made node.js compatibility the default. the rebuilt module registry, out september 9, supports apps up to 64 mebibytes with url-based imports and import.meta.
serverless code finally imports like regular code.
Context
Two separate Cloudflare items are involved. A Cloudflare changelog entry of August 4, 2026 says Workers enable the nodejs_compat and nodejs_compat_v2 flags by default for compatibility dates of 2026-08-04 or later, and earlier compatibility dates are unaffected and can opt in. A Cloudflare blog post of September 9, 2026, by Logan Gatlin and James Snell, describes the rebuilt workerd module registry, enabled by the new_module_registry compatibility flag. With it, import.meta.url, import.meta.main and import.meta.resolve() work, specifiers are parsed as real URLs including query strings and fragments, and Workers can be up to 64 MiB on all plans with the compressed-bundle limit removed.
The note joins the August 4 default, which applies by compatibility date and not to all Workers, with the September 9 module registry, which is flag-gated, so default dated September 9 is not what the module registry flag does. The post says every stable Node.js API useful in a serverless context is supported and enabled by default, which is the vendor's claim, and no list of unsupported APIs was read. Serverless code finally imports like regular code is the author's take.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
