android just made sideloading a registered identity. from september 30, verified developers must register apps for certified devices in brazil, indonesia, singapore and thailand, with the rest of the world following.

the apk stopped being anonymous.

Context

Android Developers' verification page says that, effective September 30, 2026, protections begin for users installing apps from participating stores in select regions on certified Android devices, with user protections rolling out globally in 2027. The Play Console timeline says that starting in September 2026, Android apps must be registered to a developer with a verified identity to be installed on certified Android devices, including apps distributed via Google Play. It names Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. Listed exceptions include a power-user advanced flow for installing unverified apps, launched August 2026 per the timeline, limited distribution accounts for students, teachers and hobbyists sharing with up to 20 devices without government ID or registration fee, and open-source app registration. Google Play auto-registers 99 percent of apps and other apps are registered manually in Play Console.

How it compares

The requirement is a verified developer identity linked to apps and not a content review of the app. The Developer page frames the September 30 protections around participating stores in select regions, while the Play Console timeline speaks of apps registered to be installed on certified devices, and the two framings were not reconciled here, so no blanket mandatory rollout claim is made beyond each source's stated stage. As of October 4, 2026 the start date has passed and actual enforcement was not verified. Open-source registration is not stated as an exemption from identity checks. The page says potential fees and no figure was read. Sideloading as the note's framing and the apk stopped being anonymous are the author's words.
